The film revolves around the story of Manuela (Cecilia Roth), a nurse and a single mother. However, misfortune struck with her life when Manuela's son Esteban passed away because of a car accident on his 17th birthday. After about the burial for her son, Manuela quits and moves to Barcelona, where she hopes to rediscover Lola, the father of her child. Here, she met a woman with HIV named Rosa (Penelope Cruz), who is also brought in a little child. Coincidentally, that poor child again is a "product" more of Lola, Esteban's father .
