Effie Gray has got married to the art critic John Ruskin, but Effie soon begins to feel isolated since she is repeatedly slighted by John's parents while her husband is too busy with his job to care about her. When she meets Everett Millais, one of the Pre-Raphaelites and also John's friend, she gets the sympathy from Everett and they have an affair. With an advice from Everett, Effie decides to escape from the unhappy marriage.
