The film opens with a tragic event that drastically changed the lives of a novelist and his wife. On 23 May 2010, 21-year-old Tonio van der Heijden was hit by a car and taken in a critical condition to hospital, where he died. The film revolves around the effort of the novelist and his wife to cope with the senseless death of their 21-year-old son.
